Staying out of the pigeon hole

I've been thinking about what my "voice" is as an artist. Admittedly, I’m still figuring it out.

Artist “voice” usually refers to your style and the message or feeling you want your work to convey. I’m sure I have one, but it’s a little hard for me to pin down. When people ask what kind of jewelry I make, I sometimes struggle to describe it—because I make a wide variety of things.

Mentors, coaches, and other jewelers keep telling me to stick to one style so people don't get confused. But I don't want to box myself in because I'll eventually get bored and begin to dislike the work I'm making. Plus, I want to master every jewelry technique out there. Not only because I feel like that would make me a better jeweler, but because then I'll have a wealth of techniques and experiences to choose from for my work.

So, if you're here shopping for a new piece, just know that I made absolutely everything in this store. I am the ONLY employee of Geophilia Studio. If you see a chunky stone pendant next to a more delicate pronged ring, know that I made both pieces and am proud of both pieces. And also know that my jumping around on styles likely isn't going to change because I always need to be doing something different. I can't stay in one lane too long or I'll feel stifled and oppressed.

Thanks for being here and following along on this lifelong journey. And if you ever have an idea for a custom piece, I’d love to hear from you.
